This lyrical documentary video presents a comprehensive collection of trolleys, as seen on motion picture footage dating from the 1890's to the 1990's. Included are open cars and closed cars, horse cars and cable cars, urban street cars and country trolley lines, elevated railways and underground subways. The video is dramatic, and reveals how street cars emerged as the undisputed king of urban transportation, then competed with automobiles. There is a happy ending as the video shows how light rail transit systems today offer an attractive alternative to congested traffic, and carry on the tradition of street railways. The video does an excellent job
capturing the magical history of street railways, their decline in use,
and often destruction for scrap metal. It finishes by showing how
streetcar restoration groups are now trying to keep this link to the past
alive through groups like the 696 Streetcar Restoration team. |
