Ottawa- Now that the snow is finally disappearing and more people
are pulling their bikes out of storage, the City of Ottawa is unveiling “The
Complete Ottawa Cycling Guide.” The guide is being delivered to
all city residents over the next few days.
The publication is a comprehensive guide for both recreational
and commuter cyclists, designed to help them safely enjoy a healthy,
active pastime.
The Cycling Guide covers a number of topics
including rules of the road, how to properly fit a helmet, where to take
a safe cycling course, and much more.
Also included are steps on how to take your bike on the new
O-Train, or the bus, using OC Transpo’s Rack & Roll program to
help cyclists get the most out of their trips.
The guide informs
cyclists of some new features, such as bicycle storage lockers at
Fallowfield, Greenboro, and Orleans Transitway Stations.
The lockers are part of a pilot project designed to provide
secure, protected parking for bicycles at OC Transpo Park and Ride lots.
“We pride ourselves
on our city’s quality of life with a bustling downtown and town
centers, safe streets, friendly neighbourhoods, green parks, and open
spaces” says Mayor Bob Chiarelli. “ I encourage all citizens to
cycle, and to use the guide to help you get to your destination safely
and conveniently”
“This year's Guide is a fantastic resource that
no resident of Ottawa should be without, ” said Michael Richardson, President of Citizens for
Safe Cycling. “The
information contained in this Guide is a big step toward encouraging
more people to safely use their bicycles more often, and for everyone to
recognize cyclists as legitimate road users.”
With everything needed
to enjoy a safe and healthy summer of cycling, residents are encouraged
to keep the guide handy as a useful resource.
City residents will find the publication on their doorstep
starting Friday April 5. Ottawa
Citizen subscribers will receive the guide in Sunday’s paper.
