Rural Transit
Backgrounder


New rural transit services will start on September 3, 2002 in the following communities: Cumberland Village, Carlsbad Springs, Gloucester South, Kars, Leitrim, Manotick, Munster Hamlet, Navan, North Gower, Notre-Dame-des-Champs, Richmond, Stittsville and Vars. Some communities have a brand new commuter service to downtown and local buses operating within the community, while others have expanded service or new connection options. Service for each rural area is described below. 

East

Route 720 will provide a new service between Cumberland Village and Orléans where transit riders can connect to Transitway Route 95. The route will run Monday to Friday with a trip in the morning to Orléans and two return trips in the evening. 

Route 231 is a new Rural Express service for commuters direct to downtown from Navan and Notre-Dame-des-Champs. Two weekday trips go downtown in the morning and return in the afternoon. Route 730 also provides transit service to the communities of Navan and Notre-Dame-des-Champs, and runs from Place d’Orléans. This service will run Monday to Friday with two trips in the early evening. 

Route 232 will provide new Rural Express service for residents of Carlsbad Springs and Vars. The service runs directly downtown via Carlsbad Springs, Highway 417 and the Transitway. 

South

Route 199 is a new local route offering a convenient connection Monday to Saturday between Greenboro Station and the communities of Leitrim and Gloucester South. The route serves the Rideau Carleton Raceway, as well as the Gloucester South Community Centre, the Fred G. Barrett Arena and the Hindu Temple on Bank St. 

Route 296 is a new Rural Express service for commuters from Manotick direct to downtown via River Road, Hunt Club and the Transitway. There are two weekday trips downtown in the morning and two that return in the afternoon. Route 186 is a new local route providing service Monday to Saturday during the day from Manotick to Barrhaven and Fallowfield Station. From Fallowfield Station, transit riders have several convenient connections via the Transitway to downtown, shopping, schools, recreation, etc. 

Route 196 is a new local route providing service Monday to Saturday during the day from Manotick to Greenboro Station via River Road and Hunt Club. From there, connections are available via the Transitway to downtown, shopping, schools, the O-Train and the airport.

Route 796 offers a connection from North Gower and Kars to Route 296 and downtown. There is one trip in the morning and one returning in the afternoon.  

West

Route 283 is a new Rural Express route from Richmond to downtown to replace Route 200. It operates along the same streets in Richmond, but travels downtown via Richmond Road, Fallowfield, and Highway 416 for a faster trip. The service has been increased to three trips so commuters have more flexibility with their travel plans. Route 183 is a new local route providing service Monday to Saturday during the day from Richmond to Barrhaven and Fallowfield Station, where transit riders can connect via the Transitway to downtown, shopping, schools, recreation and more. 

Route 783 offers a convenient connection from Munster Hamlet to Route 283 and downtown. There are two trips in the morning and afternoon. 

Routes 262 and 263 are new Rural Express routes to downtown from Stittsville, replacing Routes 202, 203 and 205. Route 263 follows the same routing as current Route 203, while Route 262 serves the community on the east and west sides of Main, then follows Carp Road to Highway 417. Each route has three morning and afternoon trips.  Route 163 is a new local route, replacing the current shuttle service. It operates Monday to Friday, during the day, and circulates through the community. Transitway Route 97 will be extended to Stittsville Monday through Saturday, providing connections to shopping, recreation, entertainment and more. The route will serve Kanata Centrum, Kanata Town Centre and then travel its route to downtown and the Airport. 

Park & Ride Lots

New rural Park & Ride lots are also available for those transit riders who do not have rural bus service near their home. These commuters can take advantage of free parking to connect to transit at the following locations:

·         Carlsbad Springs – GreyHawk Golf Course, 4999 Boundary Road is served by route 232.

·         Cumberland – Route 95 serves Trim Transitway Station, on Trim Road just south of Regional Road 174.

·         Leitrim – Gloucester South Community Centre, west of Bank Street and south of Leitrim Road. Served by Routes 197 and 199.

·         Manotick – Rideau Township Arena, 5572 Dr. Leach Drive.  Served by Route 296 and nearby routes 186 and 196.

·         Navan – Navan Memorial Arena, 1295 Colonial Road.  Served by Route 231.

·         Notre-Dame-des-Champs – Route 231 serves the Notre-Dame-des-Champs Church, 3739 Navan Road at Mer Bleue.

·         Richmond – Promenade of Richmond, 6179 Perth Street.  Served by Routes 183 and 283.

·         Stittsville – Carp Road (carpool lot), just south of Highway 417, is served by Route 262. 

·         Vars – Russell Township lot, east side of Rockdale, south of Highway 417.  Served by Route 232
