City and Union set to meet next week

Ottawa - In spite of yesterday’s vote by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 (ATU) to reject the City of Ottawa’s latest contract offer, the City hopes that newly scheduled meetings next week will show positive results. The ATU Local represents employees in Transit Services, Fleet Services and Real Property Asset Management.

In an effort to get back to the bargaining table, City of Ottawa representatives spoke yesterday with the federally appointed mediator who has now scheduled meetings for Monday, January 27 and Tuesday, January 28.

“The City has and will continue to negotiate in good faith and welcomes the opportunity to again sit down with the ATU next week,” said Rosemarie Leclair, General Manager of Transportation Utilities and Public Works. “Ensuring that there is no disruption of service is our top priority so we are hopeful that this situation can be resolved quickly.”

The City’s most recent offer included salary increases of 2.5% for 2002 (retroactive to April 2002), 3% in 2003 and again 3% in 2004. The City considers the offer to be fair and consistent with other recently negotiated Canadian transit system contracts. It reflects an approach that has resulted in successful contracts for other city employees.

“We have been reasonable and fair in these negotiations and we are please to learn that the ATU has reconsidered taking any job action,” said Ms. Leclair

In the event, however, that the ATU does take job action, the City of Ottawa recommends the following:

· Given the cold temperatures, it is advised that parents attempt to make other traveling arrangements for their children;

· Seniors and others vulnerable to the winter cold should also make alternative traveling plans;

· If you do take transit, dress warmly and keep moving;

· Take the first bus that comes along traveling in your direction;

· Dial 560-1000 for schedule updates;

· Follow media reports for updates and on the impact on transit service.

The City will make every effort to minimize disruptions of service and any inconvenience to riders and will keep the public informed of the latest developments through 741-4390 or octranspo.com
