City encourages downtown drivers to keep bus lanes clear

Ottawa – Starting September 20, the City of Ottawa will be increasing enforcement of bus lanes. Police and By-law officers will give tickets to any motorists using the bus lanes illegally.

Bus lanes, including the ones on Albert and Slater Streets are reserved for buses only. These lanes, marked with a diamond symbol, help OC Transpo move large numbers of people through the downtown core quickly. During rush hour, as many as 360 buses an hour, carrying 20,000 passengers travel along the bus-only lanes in the downtown core. Keeping transit on schedule is a high priority. You can help by staying out of the bus lanes.

To speed up travel on Slater Street, OC Transpo has moved some bus routes to other streets, and changed the starting point of other routes, in addition to the increased enforcement of bus lanes.
