Ottawa
– A new 3.2 km
section of Transitway from Barrhaven to the Nepean Sportsplex was
officially opened today to provide residents of South Nepean with a
convenient and reliable rapid-transit link to downtown. At a cost of $10
million, the project was funded jointly by the
City of Ottawa, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada.
“Approximately
10,000 passenger trips will be made daily on the Southwest Transitway,
which means fewer cars on the road, less traffic congestion and reduced
air pollution,” said Councillor Janet Stavinga, the chair of the
city’s Transportation Committee. “This exclusive bus roadway will help
minimize delays, maintain schedules and ensure a smooth ride free of
traffic congestion,” she added.
The
Southwest Transitway parallels the west side of Woodroffe Avenue and runs
from Fallowfield Transitway Station to the Nepean Sportsplex. Further
north, buses operate along the Woodroffe bus-only lanes to Baseline
Station where they once again join up with the Transitway.
“The
new extension is a critical infrastructure investment that will make
public transit faster and more reliable and will alleviate congestion
along this stretch of Woodroffe Avenue ” said Jan Harder, Councillor for
Bell-South Nepean.
As
of December 13, all bus routes travelling north of Fallowfield Station
will use the new Southwest Transitway to the Sportsplex instead of
Woodroffe Avenue. Customers from Merivale Gardens and Grenfell Glen that
currently walk out to Woodroffe to catch the bus will have a new peak
period route 157 in their community.
