OC Transpo

What is TRANSECURE?

Ottawa – TRANSECURE is a community watch program on wheels with OC Transpo employees looking out for the safety of all people. These remarkable individuals help offer a safe haven in any
OC Transpo vehicle for persons in distress.

OC Transpo is on the road around the clock, with as many as 820 buses, plus the O-Train, mobile cars and service trucks on street during peak hours. OC Transpo employees report to our Operations Control Centre, using two-way radios, anytime they see someone in need of help. They call in medical emergencies, break-ins, accidents, fires, suspicious situations or any other incidents involving people in distress.

Control Centre Supervisors then call for emergency services. OC Transpo works with three police services – Ottawa Police Service, OPP and RCMP as well as fire and paramedic services. In 2005, 403 TRANSECURE calls were logged and many directly involved children or seniors. Since the program’s inception in October 1989 7,460 calls have been made.

Employees help out on the spot using OC Transpo vehicles as a safe haven for people in need. As part of the Night Stop service, a passenger can ask an Operator to let them off between stops at a point closer to their destination if he or she is anxious about using their regular bus stop. Yellow emergency call boxes are available at Transitway stations for extra security and convenience. They are linked to a 24-hour Security Controller desk and with one push of the button can be connected to Security staff immediately.

The TRANSECURE program was designed to help everyone and is a great safety tool for children.  OC Transpo wants all children to feel safe in our community and to know OC Transpo employees are there to help them if the need arises.

TRANSECURE Award Ceremony

Every year, local police services, as members of OC Transpo’s Transecure Committee, help select and honour employees who made some of the best TRANSECURE calls during the previous year. One call is selected each month as the call of the month. There are 12 employees being honoured at this year’s ceremony. The most prestigious monthly winner is recognized today as the annual award winner.
