Why has this smoke-free policy come to light
now?
The Transit
By-Law, the City of Ottawa By-Law and Smoke-Free Ontario Act have been in
place for a number of years. As a world-class transit system, it is time to
be proactive and take a leadership role in providing a smoke-free
environment for our customers and employees.
What is your goal in this campaign?
It is our
goal to provide a safe and clean atmosphere for the thousands of people who
commute on our system on a daily basis, as well as for our employees. In
order to reach this goal, we will be educating the public and our employees
about the legislation that has been created to ensure a smoke-free
environment for everyone.
Will you be fining people right away?
Although
this is an educational period, it does not preclude By-Law Officers and
Transit Special Constables from issuing fines under the Transit By-Law, City
of Ottawa By-Law and/or Smoke-Free Ontario Act. Starting in 2008, there will
be strict enforcement of the no smoking legislation. Fines range from $150
to $5,000.
Will
both the public and OC Transpo employees be treated the same when confronted
with a smoking issue?
Yes,
everyone under the law is treated fairly and with the same regard. There
will be cessation programs and support offered to our employees through
Ottawa Public Heath, but at the end of the day, everyone will be subject to
the same penalties.
What if I see someone smoking?
This will
be a common concern for many. We will do our best to respond to all calls of
concern and will address each situation as it arises. Individuals are
encouraged to contact OC Transpo Customer Service or a Transit
Special Constable if they have a complaint.
Where are people supposed to smoke?
There
will be no special areas designated anywhere on transit property for
smoking. Smoking will only be
permitted 9 metres (about 30 feet) from any Transit Services property line
and 9 metres from any bus stop on a City street.
