Ottawa
– The City of Ottawa and
OC Transpo are pleased to welcome an additional 27
new bus operators to the ranks of more than 1,600 professional operators
who provide safe public transit to Ottawa residents.
“I
am pleased that 27 new operators will get behind the wheel this week and
provide the much-needed resources to ensure OC Transpo is able to
fulfill its service plan," said Mayor Larry O'Brien. "Ongoing hiring and
refresher training for current bus operators will be a huge help in
improving public transit service to Ottawa residents.”
New
operators undergo 32 days of intensive training in the classroom and on
the road. Topics covered during training include defensive driving,
customer service skills, special requirements for persons with
disabilities, airbrake qualification, Ministry of Transportation licence
requirements, and OC Transpo operating procedures and regulations.
“Congratulations to the 27 men and women who have joined OC Transpo’s
growing team of bus operators today,” said Councillor Alex Cullen, Chair
of the Transit Committee. “They will now serve as transit ambassadors
for the City of Ottawa.”
Bus operator training programs occur all year long, including training
for new operators as well as refresher training for experienced
operators. Another group of 30 new candidates will commence training
next week. It is expected that up to 150 new operators will be hired by
the end of this year. Anyone who is interested in a rewarding career as
a bus operator is encouraged to visit the career postings at
