Ottawa
– OC Transpo’s first women Light Rail Operators have graduated and will get
behind the controls of the O-Train. As former bus operators, Margaret
Bicknell and Margaret Lafrance successfully completed a stringent
ten-week training course in light rail operations.
“Congratulations go out to all seven Light Rail Operators who have
graduated successfully,” said Councillor Alex Cullen, Chair of the
Transit Committee. “We’re especially pleased that two women have taken
up the challenge of being the first women Light Rail Operators in
Ottawa.”
The percentage of women in the workforce in Transit Services has been
steadily growing over the years. Currently, 10% of bus operators are
women. Increasingly, the role of women in transit is varied, with many
opportunities outside the traditional office position, such as Training
Instructors, Transit Supervisors, Fare Enforcement Officers and Special
Constables.
“I encourage all women to consider a rewarding career at OC Transpo,”
said Alain Mercier, Director of Transit Services. “If you’ve got good
customer service skills and enjoy a diversity of people, then you may
have what it takes to put yourself in the driver’s seat.”
Starting tomorrow, the City of Ottawa will be making the call for new
candidates interested in joining the ranks as a professional bus
operator. New shelter and bus ads will be asking people to “Steer Your
Career” to transit. Women are encouraged to submit their application
along with all qualified candidates. To apply, just visit the career
postings at ottawa.ca/careers.
