O-Train Safety
Operation Lifesaver is a national education program whose goal is to reduce the injuries and damages caused by train/ railway crossing incidents. For more information, check out their website: www.operationgareautrain.ca

By following some simple steps, you can help make your trip a safe one.

  • Plan your route ahead of time.

  • Stand behind the yellow safety line on the platform. Do not wait on the platform extenders.

  • Stay clear of the tracks, except at designated crossings.

  • At designated crossings, do not cross when the signals are flashing. Look both ways before crossing. The trains are quiet and can approach more quickly than they appear to be travelling.

Boarding

  • Never run for a train – it’s better to wait for the next one and avoid a serious accident.

  • Wait until the train comes to a full stop and let passengers exit before you board the train.

  • Watch your step boarding and exiting.

  • Never pry open or attempt to hold open the doors with your arm, leg or any object. Once the light on the door button is off, you cannot open the door.

  • Be careful that backpacks, bags, purse straps or coats don’t get caught in the doors as you get on or off.

Inside the O-Train

  • Hold onto the grab rails or straps for safety.

  • Keep the aisle clear of tripping hazards such as bags, backpacks and briefcases.

  • For obvious safety reasons, you cannot go barefoot on the O-Train, nor wear skates or rollerblades.

Traveling with Children

  • Take extra care when travelling with young children – hold their hand when boarding and exiting and keep them seated.

  • Hold strollers securely, put on their brakes and keep the aisle clear, or hold your child and fold the stroller.

We can help

  • If you’re lost or feel sick, harassed or threatened on the train, speak to the operator via the emergency intercom located near each door. He or she will help or radio for help.

  • Station platforms are monitored by closed circuit TV cameras and patrolled by Transit Law Enforcement Officers. You can call for assistance or report an incident by using the free yellow emergency callboxes located in every station shelter.
