Name the Trains Contest Information

The Name the Trains Contest is now closed. Thank you to everyone who submitted a name suggestion.

Are you a child or youth aged 16 or under who wants to be part of Ottawa’s history? This is your chance!

OC Transpo is now running a “Name the Trains Contest" to find creative, fun and unique names for each of its 40 train cars: 34 O-Train Confederation Line cars and 6 O-Train Trillium Line cars. Names will be placed on the trains in 2018.

The contest will run from November 2, 2017 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time (ET) and ends December 8, 2017 at 11:55 PM ET – so please submit your train car name(s) prior to the end of the contest close date and time to qualify. You can submit as many separate entries as you wish, but each contest participant can only win once. Here are some details to keep in mind when choosing a name:

  • Names must be short (maximum of 16 characters, spaces included)
  • Names should be related to trains (or train service) or have a Canadian or Ottawa-related significance
  • Names must fit into one or more of the following five categories: people, animals, natural world, culture or history
  • Names must be bilingual or easily translatable (English & French)
  • Names should be friendly (negative names will be disqualified), have a pleasant sound and be easy to remember

Before filling out the below form, all children and youth must speak with a parent/guardian and obtain their permission to participate.

  • All submissions including winning names become the sole property of the City of Ottawa and the City of Ottawa has the right to use it/them without remuneration or liability.
  • Name submissions will be reviewed based on the parameters listed above throughout late 2017/early 2018 by a panel made up of City of Ottawa elected officials and employees.
  • The parents/guardians of winners will be notified via email and/or telephone in 2018.
  • The winning train car names will be posted on and the website.
  • Winners will be invited to a media event with the Mayor of Ottawa in early 2018 that will announce the winners and winning names to the public.
  • Names will be placed on all trains in 2018; however, exact details and dates are still to be confirmed.

Personal information is collected under the authority of Sections 8 and 10 of the Municipal Act, 2001, SO. 2001, c. 25, for the purposes of administering the Contest. The personal information gathered about participants through this website will not be used or disclosed for any other purpose except as permitted or required by law. Winners will not be required to attend the winner recognition event and a parent/guardian of a winner will be provided the opportunity to choose whether or not have the City announce/post of the name of the child together with the winning train name.
