1. What is a Summer U-Pass?

The Summer U-Pass is a new fare product that provides eligible college and university students with unlimited access to all OC Transpo and STO services from May 1 to August 31. The summer U-Pass is available to any college and university student who is registered as full-time per their institution’s definition of full time student status.

3. What’s different about the Summer U-Pass?

The Summer U-Pass works the same your Fall/Winter U-Pass, with two important differences:

  1. The Summer U-Pass will be a different colour than U-Passes issued in the preceding Fall/Winter semesters. This will make visual verification easier for operators and fare enforcement; and
  2. OC Transpo will be piloting a U-Pass smart card this summer only with uOttawa students.  It will be valid on both OC Transpo and STO buses.  This pilot will collect valuable information that will be used to develop a system wide U-Pass smart card in 2017 and beyond.  uOttawa students are asked to tap their U-Pass on all bus and train readers except for OC Transpo express routes.

4. So I am supposed to tap my smartcard on all OC Transpo and STO buses?

Yes – if you are a uOttawa student you tap on all buses with one exception. uOttawa students are asked not to tap their U-Pass on OC Transpo express buses. Students travelling on express routes are asked to board at the front of the bus and show their U-Pass to the operator for visual inspection.

5.  Is the U-Pass smartcard for University of Ottawa U-Pass holders new?

Yes. U-Pass holders from the uOttawa will be participating in a pilot using a smartcard as part of the O-Train Confederation Line fare gate project. This pilot will collect valuable information that will be used to develop the U-Passes so that it can be used across the complete bus and rail system.

6. Why is only the uOttawa using the U-Pass smartcard?

The nature of the pilot meant that at least one institution would participate and the University of Ottawa was in the best position to work with OC Transpo and STO.  In contrast to other U-Pass institutions, uOttawa has a high percentage of students that use both STO and OC Transpo as part of their commute to campus. By limiting distribution of the smartcards, opportunities and issues can be identified and addressed before smartcards are issued to all U-Pass holders.

7. Will the fall U-Pass be a smartcard?

No. The pilot will run only during the summer. The 2016-2017 Fall/Winter U-Pass at all four institutions will be the same process as the 2015-2016 Fall/Winter term.

8. I am only taking a full time course load for one of the two summer terms. Am I eligible for the Summer U-Pass?
