Accessibility Features

OC Transpo's vehicles and Transitway stations offer customers with disabilities a number of features that make taking transit easier.

Bus Accessibility Features



ISA SymbolAll of OC Transpo's buses are accessible. They are identified with the blue and white ISA (International Symbol of Accessibility) wheelchair symbol.

The following features can help you get around on the bus:

  • Kneeling feature that allows the bus to lower to the curb so the first step is easier
  • Ramp for easy boarding, with slip-resistant surface and raised edges to prevent your assistive device, wheelchair, walker or scooter from rolling off
  • Cooperative or priority seating near the front of the bus for persons with disabilities and other customers who may have difficulty standing on a moving bus
  • Two allocated spaces for persons with assistive devices. Each of these spaces come equipped with stability belts, so you can secure your device. A stop-request button is also located nearby. When pushed, it sounds a dual-tone and turns on a different stop light on the bus operator's dashboard, indicating the ramp is needed.

  • Automatic announcement of next stops over the speaker system inside the bus: Next Stop Announcement System (NSAS)
  • Visual display of the next stop, bus route, destination and time on a sign inside the bus
  • Visual warning light and audible alarm when the kneeling feature or ramp are being raised or lowered
  • Slip-resistant, low-glare floors
  • Lights to illuminate the doorway, passages and inside of bus during the loading and unloading of customers
  • Colour-contrasted handholds and grab bars

Para Transpo Accessibility Features


These features can help you get around on Para Transpo buses:

  • Para Transpo VehicleLow-floor kneeling function for easier boarding for ambulatory customers
  • Two ramps for boarding customers using assistive devices – one on the right side of the vehicle and one at the rear of the vehicle; each with raised edges to prevent a customer from rolling off, and a colour-contrasted strip at its leading edge
  • Three allocated spaces for persons using assistive devices

            (e.g. wheelchairs, scooters or other assistive devices)
  • Each of these allocated spaces come equipped with stability belts, so the operator can secure your device
  • Ambulatory seating for six to eight passengers
  • Wider rear ramp and rear entrance providing easier access for customers who use self-propelled assistive devices that are larger and heavier than average
  • LED lighting inside the vehicles and at each door that automatically illuminates the entrance and ramps when the doors open
  • Slip-resistant, low-glare floors and ramp surfaces
  • Colour-contrasted grab bars and handles at each seat and at the inside of each entrance
  • Air conditioning

Accessible taxi cabs also have a number of accessibility features:

  • Low-floor rear access for customers with assistive devices
  • Lower step at the side entrance for ambulatory customers
  • One allocated space for a person with an assistive device. NOTE: If you use a mobility device or require assistance, advise the taxi dispatcher when you book your trip.
  • This space comes equipped with stability belts, so the operator can secure your device
  • Ambulatory seating for up to three passengers

O-Train Accessibility Features


These features can help you get around on the O-Train:

  • Accessible entrances at both ends of the platform for easy boarding
  • Cooperative seating near the train's entrances for persons with disabilities and for those who may have a hard time standing on a moving train
  • Two spaces for persons with mobility devices just inside the accessible entrance
    » Mobility device size guidelines (ie: wheelchairs, scooters or other assistive devices)
  • Automatic announcement of next stops over the speaker system inside the train
  • Visual display of the next stop and time inside the train
  • Slip-resistant, low-glare floors
  • Lights at the entrances and inside the train to help you board and exit
  • Handholds and grab bars

Transitway Station Accessibility Features


These features can help you get around our Transitway stations:

  • Elevators and escalators are provided at some stations to assist you in moving from one level to another
  • Walkways and ramps provide barrier-free access
  • At downtown stops along the Transitway where OC Transpo has a "one-stop" boarding policy, customers who may have difficulty boarding along the platform, may choose to wait at the bus stop flag and signal the bus to make a stop.  In some locations, such as the eastbound platform of Mackenzie King Station, this accessible boarding location is marked with an International Symbol of Access (ISA), the stylized picture of a person using a wheelchair. 
  • Textured surfaces at most stations warn you when you are close to the platform edge
  • Firm, stable and slip-resistant ground and floor surfaces
  • Yellow emergency call boxes allow you to request assistance if you are stranded or concerned about your safety
  • Benches to allow you to sit and rest
  • Pay telephones provide free, one-button access to Transit Information for travel planning assistance and to Transit Security in the event of an emergency
  • Accessible parking spaces at Park & Ride lots.

Loop System



Image of counter loopThe Loop System is in operation at Lincoln Fields, Rideau Centre and Orléans Customer Service Centres.

The counter loop is an assistive listening device that facilitates communication to persons with a hearing loss, with the use of a hearing aid or cochlear implant.  

Hearing Aid and Cochlear Implant users with a telecoil (T-switch) can transfer the sound source directly to their hearing aids without the interference of background noise.
