The things I enjoy most about being an OC Transpo bus operator: when you drive a bus you’re basically your own boss, you’re by yourself but you also know you have that team behind you if you ever need it and that’s the greatest thing about working here because it’s the best of both worlds.

Why did I choose to become an OC Transpo bus operator? So one thing is the benefits are really great here at OC Transpo. Also there’s a lot of room for advancement with OC Transpo and the City of Ottawa at large. So if you want to move up you have many opportunities to go to many different departments.

00:35

A typical start to my day is I come into the garage, I’ll say hello to my fellow operators. I get my docket and do my safety check on my bus and away I go.

What about being an OC Transpo bus operator do I find fulfilling? I had an elderly customer who looked really frantic and was lost and who did know where she was going and I was just about to get off my shift on the street so I was able to actually go with her on the train and help her where she was going so that was really a good feeling

Some really are dependent on the bus service that we provide so I feel like I’m giving back to the community and helping them reach their destination.

At the peak of our pandemic we had a lot of shelters closing and during inclement weather there was a lot of scenarios where we had to help customers find shelter or seek a safe space for them just to be warm and safe. And fortunately sometimes we became their sole option for shelter. I felt like even us just providing that one round trip for somebody who required that heat, it was really important in their days.
