Safe riding reminder

Two Special Constables in uniform in front a cruiser

Riding on the outside of any vehicle is dangerous and illegal.

Riding on the outside of a bus, also known as bus surfing, risks serious injury or death to the person riding. It also risks causing an accident that could harm others.

Going viral for a reckless activity is not worth the loss of life, injury, charges, or being fined up to $615. Bus surfing directly impacts every customer inside the bus. What’s more, it adds stress on our bus operators who work hard every day to provide safe and professional service.

How we’re responding

This activity is becoming more frequent among high school students. As a result, OC Transpo’s Special Constables are doing more outreach at schools where bus surfing has taken place to teach students how to ride transit safely.

The Special Constable Unit actively investigates each occurrence of bus surfing using security camera footage and location information.

If you notice someone bus surfing:

  • Let your bus operator know
  • Notify nearby OC Transpo staff
  • Call 9-1-1

If something or someone makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable at any point during your journey, let us know!  Report it online or call the Special Constable Unit at 613-741-2478.
