Each year, OC Transpo celebrates bus operators who have achieved significant safe driving milestones and gone above and beyond their regular duties to keep customers and community members safe.

On April 14, 2024, OC Transpo hosted a ceremony at Ben Franklin Place honouring last year’s Safe Driving and Transecure award recipients.

“OC Transpo employees play an important part in making Ottawa a better and safer city,” said OC Transpo General Manager Renee Amilcar. “The Transecure program and the Safe Driving awards illustrates how dedicated and committed we are to our customers and residents.”

Safe Driving

The Safe Driving Awards program recognizes Bus Operators who have an exemplary safe driving record, which includes over 1,000 hours of driving with no at-fault collisions. This year, 24 Bus Operators were recognized for 20, 25, 30, 35 and more than 40 years of collision-free driving.

One long-standing Operator, Jerome, was honoured for their 45 years of collision-free driving with OC Transpo – such an accomplishment!

Going above and beyond

Transecure is a community watch program on wheels. OC Transpo employees act as the eyes and ears on City roads, looking out for the safety of both customers and community members.

While on the road, OC Transpo employees call in medical emergencies, break-ins, accidents, fires, suspicious incidents or other circumstances involving people in distress. In 2023, OC Transpo staff made 87 Transecure calls and worked closely with Ottawa Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as well as Ottawa Fire Services and Paramedic Services to help residents in their moments of need.

At this year’s ceremony 15 outstanding employees were honoured for their brave and selfless actions during 2023.

Transecure Employee the Year

The 2023 Transecure Employee of the Year was Bus Operator Kirk. While on his route, Kirk heard a passenger’s call for help and discovered a child choking on a piece of candy. He successfully performed the Heimlich Manoeuvre to dislodge the candy from the child’s airway allowing them to breathe normally.
